Two words that are not interchangeable
Global warming is one measurement: the rise in the planet's average surface temperature caused mainly by burning coal, oil, gas and clearing forests. Climate change is everything that rise sets off - shifted monsoons, longer dry spells, fiercer cyclones, sea-level rise, and ecosystem disruptions.
Warming is the cause. Climate change is the bill. A warmer atmosphere holds more moisture, which is why the same year can bring both a harsher drought and a heavier flood to places a few hundred kilometres apart.
What is actually trapping the heat
Sunlight reaches the ground and bounces back as infrared. Certain gases absorb that outgoing heat and re-radiate it downward. More of those gases, more heat retained.
- Carbon dioxide (CO₂) - from coal, oil, gas, cement and cleared forests.
- Methane (CH₄) - from livestock, paddy fields, landfills and gas leaks.
- Nitrous oxide (N₂O) - mostly from over-application of nitrogen fertiliser.
Cutting a forest emits twice
A standing forest is a carbon store and a carbon pump at once. Fell it and you lose both: carbon locked in wood is released as timber burns or rots, and annual absorption stops for good.
Major emission sources globally include electricity generation, transport, industry, buildings, agriculture, waste, and deforestation.
